Multiple positions

Position Description 

This position requires a full academic-year commitment.  Ideal candidate will possess a strong commitment to academic success for educationally disadvantaged, low-income, first-generation populations. They must be able to provide one-on-one support, and support capacity-building for the program. Preference will be given to qualified individuals who have overcome barriers similar to those experienced by ETS participants.  Successful candidates must also demonstrate support for diversity, equity and inclusiveness as well as participate in maintaining a respectful, positive work environment. The Student Development Counselor will report to the Associate Director of the ETS program.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Recruit eligible participants from NYC DOE partner schools, between the ages of 11-20 to receive ETS services and maintain a caseload of participants, providing- virtual and/or in-person services, group workshops and support to help participants overcome barriers to post-secondary education
  • Provide information and resources to school staff, participants, parents and or caregivers at partner schools
  • Collaborate with other program staff in the development and implementation a curriculum of pre-collegiate  services for enrolled participants to achieve established program objectives
  • Use technology and social media responsibly and creatively to disseminate information and communicate with participants, parents and school personnel
  • Monitor and maintain accurate records of participants academic progress
  • Document all program activities and services provided to participants
  • Collect, compile, and provide data for monthly, quarterly and annual reporting
  • Participate in program evaluation at the partner schools
  • Identify and when necessary refer participants participants to relevant campus and community resources
  • Support and counsel participants to develop a Postsecondary plan which includes assisting participants, parents and or caregivers  in completing all aspects of the college admissions, financial aid processes including but not limited to standardized test registrations, college admissions applications, and the NYS HESC ( Higher Education Service Corporation)/ FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and CSS financial aid forms
  • Accompany/chaperone participants to program events such as on campus activities, field trips, and regional and out of state college visits
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications & Experience:  

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university is required
  • 1-3 years work experience in youth development and/or post secondary access or related fields
  • Experience using Google Suite, Zoom, and Microsoft Office Suite experience along with willingness to learn and use new systems
  • Effective capabilities to facilitate engaging workshops and other presentations
  • Strong work ethic and the ability to work independently
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Effective verbal and written communications skills
  • Sensitivity to different cultures and communities; demonstrated ability to work well with diverse or marginalized populations; can bring in allies across diverse communities
  • Ability to work with staff at all levels within a diverse, multicultural, collaborative environment
  • Promote and provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement

Compensation & Benefits

Salary will commensurate with experience.

Program Hours: Monday – Friday 10:30am – 7:00pm

Compensation: $25-$30/hr

Weekly Work Hours: 15-19 hours – weekday afternoon

Multiple positions, 2-15 hours a week

Position Description

Tutors are selected for Urban Scholars based on their prior tutoring experience and their commitment and ability to motivate students. Tutors are matched with five students based on their tutoring ability in a combination of subjects in which the student needs assistance. Tutor positions are primarily paid with work-study or volunteer positions. Responsibilities include:

  • Tutoring for 2 hours on a weekday afternoon, at school site
  • Encouraging and motivating tutees to strive for academic excellence
  • Actively participating in quarterly tutor training sessions
  • Documenting tutoring content and hours after each session
  • Communicating regularly with Tutor Coordinators

Application Process

Urban Scholars requires a full academic-year commitment from all tutors. You must be available to tutor on two (2) weekday afternoon per week. If you are not able to make the full commitment but would be willing to act as a substitute tutor, please indicate so on the application.
