Facing My Heritage

Facing My Heritage

In this course students will discover DNA as scientists do today and explore how genomics has transformed our understanding of who we are and where we come from. The lessons in this course/unit will address the genetic concepts of inheritance and variation of traits by engaging students in the process of application of genomic research on human genetic variation, identity and ancestry. Students participate in a hands-on learning approach that emphasizes collecting data, analysis and comparison of data and drawing conclusions. The activities in this unit will center on what DNA information tells us about our identity and what it does not. Students will also consider the ethical and social implications of the study of human genetic information. They will also have an opportunity to trace their own DNA at a discounted price.

Background Information

Does your family identify with particular ancestry? Would you like to find out whether or not that identity is true? For centuries, people have been actively gathering, preserving and sharing their written records and passing down their oral family histories for many purposes: to trace the journey of their ancestors, to explore their heritage, or to connect with unknown relatives. Genomics is the newest tool for looking deep into our personal histories to trace the paths of our ancestors. Direct-to-consumer genetic testing companies are now identifying the composition of your ancestry by looking at thousands of DNA markers for each person, then comparing your DNA results to DNA databases from other Individuals around the world to identify common ancestors. In this unit/course you will learn how ancestry testing works and investigate human variation through the lens of genomics.
