SUMMARY:2016 Summer Program
DESCRIPTION:Now in its 23th year\, the Urban Scholars offers highly motivated students\, the opportunity of a lifetime. It’s much more than just another Summer Program it’s an experience. For Student who participate during the summer\, there are many great optional trips to attractions both in and out of New York City\, included are on-campus events such as College Career Conversations. Residential students are carefully supervised by specially trained and selected resident advisers who look after their safety and general well-being. \nThe Program is a rich and demanding academic experience for all its participants\, but it’s also a change for bright\, high-achieving students to have an enjoyable summer\, make new friends\, get a taste of college life\, and explore New York City in a supervised setting. \nDaily Summer Schedule\nPlease note that each curricular option has individual scheduling requirements and might deviate from the general outline below. \nMONDAY – THURSDAY\n7:30AM – 8:20AM:  Breakfast \n8:30AM – 10:00PM: Concurrent Workshops in Presentation Skills and Critical Reading \n11:40PM – 12:30PM: LUNCH — Midday break- Students can use the cafeteria or lounge to break from classes and socialize with their peers \n12:35PM – 2:05PM: Second session- Exploratory classes begin. Students take classes that are not usually offered in school during the academic year. \n2:10PM – 3:40PM: Students take elective courses during the afternoon session \n3:45PM – 4:50PM: College Workshops and afternoon enrichment activities are offered during this time \nEvening\n\nThe day concludes at 6pm. Commuters will make their way to the buses and trains to head home. Students who are participating in the Residential Program will catch the CCNY shuttle or walk down to the dorms in groups\, where they will continue their evening with dinner and workshops and prepare for the next day. \nSaturday and Sunday\n\nOn the weekends\, residential students will participate in organized activities\, both on and off campus. Enrichment activities include: field trips to art exhibits and museums in the city\, and local activities and events in the community. \nSPECIAL EVENTS\nCollege Fair\n\nThe College Fair\, hosted by Columbia University\, is scheduled for Thursday\, July 21. Admissions Officers from over 100 colleges and universities as well as representatives from the Princeton Review and Kaplan\, are on hand to answer questions and provide information and literature. Students will have the opportunity to attend and inquire about the colleges and universities of their choice. \n\nEvening and Weekend Activities for Residential Students\nRecreational options are offered on the weekends. Although residential students are not expected to cover expenses such as transportation\, there may be small admission fees\, for entrance into museums or other events in the city. Therefore\, we suggest that students have access to a minimum of $20.00 per event. \nRecreational options include: \nOn-campus supervised trips to various recreational and cultural activities/events in and around New York City. Possible trips planned to: Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom\, Whitewater Rafting and the Amazing Race/New York City Scavenger Hunt. \nWhile participation in these extracurricular activities is optional\, we strongly encourage our students take part\, so that they will balance their academics while still having time for fun and enjoyment. . These activities are specially selected to expand students’ awareness of the cultural\, social\, and historical diversity of New York City. An orientation held at the college will help prepare student to use good judgment so that they safely enjoy their surroundings.  \nDining\n\nMeal Plans (Residential students only) \nAll residential students’ meals are covered by the program\, which includes three meals The meal plan allows students to select items from a fixed menu for breakfast and lunch. It’s about careful supervision\, a strong and supportive social network\, numerous organized on-campus activities\, and scores of optional excursions all over New York City. \nResidence halls are staffed by a Residence Director\, student Resident Assistants and a 24-hour desk security coverage. Students are expected to observe every reasonable precaution and follow residence hall regulations for the safety and well being of all campus residents. \nResidential students and their resident advisers are housed in residence halls for 3-weeks with students living in single-sex quad suites with 2 students per room. Each suite has 1-shared bathroom\, kitchen and dining area.  Other Amenities include\, free WI-FI throughout the building\, free modern laundry facilities\, on-site convenience store\, and health club\, outside grounds for sports or barbecues and many other comforts. \nLiving on campus adds an exciting dimension to all Urban Scholars participants; new friends\, academic improvement and fun. it’s also convenient and comfortable. All halls offer 24-hour desk security and in-room Internet access. Residential living offers Urban Scholars the chance to experience first hand what college life is like. It gives students an opportunity to foster independence and responsibility. In\, addition\, students have a chance to make new friends and work on their social skills. \nSupervision\n\nResident advisers/Counselors are assigned groups of approximately eight high school students and are trained to provide safety\, comfort\, guidance\, and fun for those in their charge. In addition to their custodial dormitory responsibilities\, resident advisers serve as full-time Summer Program assistants\, providing administrative support\, teaching assistance\, and a full range of extracurricular activities. \nParents must submit written permission to the resident adviser in order for a student to be away overnight. The permission note must include the dates and times that a student will be away as well as the location and phone number of where he or she will be staying. Permission notes must be submitted at least 24 hours prior to departure. \nDormitory Security\n\nThe dormitories are staffed 24 hours daily with security personnel. No individual without a program identification card and/or clearance for dormitory access is allowed to enter the dorm floor. ALL students are expected to abide by the rules outlined in the Code of Conduct.
